Science Censored

censorImagine you could cure a disease but the government refused to allow you to study the data.

That’s what happened at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) according to the latest issue of Scientific American.

The CDC hires scientists and doctors to study a range of issues from flesh-eating bacteria to tuberculosis, and staff gather evidence on what harms you—morbidity—and what kills you—mortality.

So if you want to know what will kill you at age 26, the CDC can give you a good guess.

But the government censored the CDC from telling you how likely you are to die from a gun.

According to an editorial in the March 2013 issue of Scientific American, the National Rifle Association lobbied Congress hard: funds were withdrawn that allowed the CDC to study morbidity and mortality related to guns.

Laws were rewritten to prevent scientists from doing research counter to the NRA agenda—such as exploring gunshot deaths.

Guess what?

Your risk of dying from a gunshot is rising. The editorial predicts that in two years gunshot wounds will top the number one cause of violent death (car crashes).

And if you have a gun in your house you triple the chances a family member will get shot.

It’s one thing to argue that responsible adults should own guns. It’s quite another to argue that information should be censored.

1 Response to Science Censored

  1. This is truly appalling! (And not the first time I have heard or read this.) The NRA membership doesn’t even know what their leadership is doing, and if they do, the majority don’t agree with it. Why are we letting such a small group of people dictate to the Government and the CDC? Oh, right, because the NRA lobby has lots of money. Politics as usual.
